Do you eat OrganicI have been reading that Jamie Oliver is trying to encourage people to buy organic chicken. I was just wondering how many people buy organic food and if you do what do you buy?
I do buy organic fruit sometimes, mainly for Katie and organic lettuce from time to time and if the veg is on offer I will buy that too. it so very expensive though, and organic meat and poultry is extremely expensive. I think Jamie Oliver needs to realise that the ordinary people of this country cannot afford the luxury of buying organic products on a regular basis.
| Quote: | Jamie Oliver wants to convert the British public to organic chicken in his new show.
The celebrity chef will draw attention to the living conditions of cheap, intensively-reared chickens in Jamie's Fowl Dinners.
The programme, which airs as part of Channel 4's special food season, will see Oliver use a gala dinner attended by celebrities and the public to highlight the way in which some chickens are raised.
Hello! quotes him as saying: "My ambition is to change the 95% of Britain eating standard chicken, to get them to step up to a better-welfare bird."
Channel 4 head of factual entertainment Andrew Mackenzie said: "Jamie's simple message in an overt way is if you knew the process, how your eggs are produced and what you eat, you would probably buy free-range, organic chickens."
The food fortnight, which encourages viewers "to think before they eat", also includes programmes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Gordon Ramsay.
The season forms part of Channel 4's pledge to try out "new ideas" in the key 9pm slot in its winter schedule.
Jamie's Fowl Dinners airs at 9pm Channel 4 on January 11. |

Yeah I agree, organic food is ridiculously expensive. One of my friends got told by his dad to go into the supermarket and buy some eggs, and he came out with organic eggs haha, his dad wasn't pleased at the price!
I think when I'm older and have more money I will take more care in what I eat and improve my diet and buy better foods, especially when I have children, but at the moment I have so little money being a student I really can't afford to buy organic stuff, as you say, the majority of the UK people are in the same boat.

Never really eat organic to be honest. It is expensive and doesn't seem worth it. Funny how healthy foods are always far more expensive than eating junk food. You could fill yourself up on $3 at McDonald's!

I tried to buy Organic veg for a while, and I still do from time to time, but it is just too expensive compared to normal veg. It's easy for Jamie Oliver to buy organic all the time I'm sure, but not for ordinary people.

Maybe Jamie can lend us some money to buy organic all the time.

^^^ Exactly. It's alright for him, with plenty of cash in the bank, to preach about how much better it would be for us all to eat Organic. I would love to be able to buy organic, I'm well aware of how much better it would be for me and my girls, but unfortunately it's so stupidly expensive and my budget won't run to that.

In my eyes my mother has an addiction with organic food, in my house we buy loads of organic stuff. Occasionally I do notice the difference in taste for example organic chicken tastes different to normal chicken, I like the organic chicken now perhaps I have gotten used to it.
Lol the majority of our food in my house is organic, heck even the ketchup we buy is organic!

^ I do buy Sainsbury's Organic mince pies at Christmas, honestly they are gorgeous. No alcohol in them and no sugar. They aren't cheap but at Christmas they are a treat.
When katie used to eat weetabix I bought her the organic version and it was really tasy, the difference in colour to the regular version was they were really dull and dark. So they must bleach or lighten the regular stuff!

Yeah Sainsburys sell loads of fairtrade stuff, all their bananas are fairtrade and the list is getting longer as they source more and more fairtrade foods!

Not an Orga-holic person.
Even though it's expensive i don't believe that the organic food is actually "organic". It's the same old type taken, inserted into an "organic" labelled container and sold for a increased price.

^There are legal constrictions with organic food, it has to be grown within Eu rules. You can't advertise a product that isn't actually grown or produced as that product. Its like foods that are being advertised that they aren't genetically modified and they were, it wouldn't be allowed.
You do tend to find that Organic food doesn't have the shelf life of normal food so that is why it is more expensive! Also there is more loss with crops being grown without pesticide for obvious reasons

I can totally understand the need for organic food to be more expensive than the usual stuff, it does stand to reason I guess but I think it's been made a little too expensive, and more than likely prices most people out of the market for it.
