France to kick illegal downloaders off web.Damn. If this law is implemented here, I'm screwed!!!
Does anybody else here download? I don't download music - just movies and TV.
| Quote: | French web users who download illegally three times face having their internet connections cut under new rules.
Anyone who is found to have obtained music or films without doing it through legal means will be sent an email warning them not to do it again.
If they are caught again a registered letter will find its way to them and once a third breach of copyright is recorded their web connection could be cut off for up to a year.
The new rules come in next January and will involve the setting up of a new organisation to deal with complaints from the film and music industry.
French President Nicholas Sarkozy told his cabinet the new rules were to help ensure the internet was not a "lawless zone".
Culture Minister Christine Albanel added: "We know that we are not going to eradicate piracy 100%, but we think that we can reduce it significantly."
France is seen to be a hotbed for internet piracy and the new regulations, which are set to go before Parliament on January 1, are part of plans to cut illegal downloading by 80%. |

FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECK.
Do they not realise that that's nearly every web user? I don't download movies and TV shows any more, they were taking up too much space so I'm sticking to music only now.

It's hard to police and will cost a fortune to run!
Anyone using Virgin media/blueyonder/NTL in the UK will have the same issues as they have announced they are starting the '3 and out' rule for pirating.
Looks like newsgroups could make a come back (well they already have actually). For all you younger people, newsgroups is what we used to use to download movies, tunes and software before P2P technology was invented, much, much harder to trace and police but a little more awkward to use. A few of my mates have already reverted to using newsgroups for TV and movie downloads because of this.

Does Peer Guardian protect you from getting caught? I heard something about that before. Don't know much about it though.
Hugh, what are the rules here re: downloading?

I doubt our glorious Taoiseach or any of his shower up in the Dail are close to figuring out how to turn a computer on so I think we're safe from any laws at the moment.
The providers might be a different story. I'll have to check it out.

Poo. If I lived in France I'd be buggered!
It's only music at the moment that I download and I occasionly download movies too because I can add them to my iPod.
I hope they don't bring the law here!

lol! It'll be happening in the UK too.
I must look into Peer Guardian. I'm sure I read before that it stops them from getting your details.

Peer Guardian's good but it's not 100% effective. Depending on how much downloading you do, it might be worth buying a seedbox -http://filesharefreak.com/2008/05/01/10-reasons-why-you-need-a-seedbox/
