I have my browser pop up a blank page at start up.
I use RSS feeds for info and news so see something in my RSS reader then launch a browser from there if I want more detail.
I'm interested in Wikipedia's brand new search engine Wikia it could be a major competitor to Google. It's open source so wont rely on revenue (I guess) so will have more honest 'un sponsored' results. It's very early on in development and is still at Alpha stage so search results wont be great for a long time yet but it's worth keeping an eye on.

I've got a Speed Dial thing, which Opera used, but you can get on Firefox. Its got 9 programmable slots, which when clicked take you to the site in question. Simple, easy, impossible to live without.
