Marion Jones sentenced to 6 months in prison.I'm surprised nobody did a topic on this, but I don't know if we have many athletics fans on here. I'm kind of surprised she was sentenced to jail - many people have been caught out for steroid abuse before, and not served jail time. However, I'm not disappointed that she's paying for this. Maybe this will send out a wake-up call to some other athletes who are guilty of steroid abuse, or maybe not, as many of them seem to be happy to cheat as long as they get away with it. This is one sport that has really been ruined by drugs and cheating.
| Quote: | WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Marion Jones said she was scared. She said she was sorry. With a catch in her voice, she said her young sons needed her.
“I ask you to be as merciful as a human being can be,” she implored the judge.
To no avail.
The former Olympic track gold medalist was sentenced to six months in prison Friday for lying to investigators about using performance-enhancing drugs and her role in a check-fraud scam.
And so ended a long fall from grace for the one-time fastest woman on earth.
She leaned over the courtroom railing and softly cried into her husband’s shoulder. |

^ Oh I think they are using her as an example, she is high profile in the sport and I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. There are honest athletes out there who have never taken a drug in their life, they get up each day, train in all sorts of weather 24/7, 365 days a year and the cheats in this game are making a mockery of them!

I personally believe a classic line here 'Don't do the crime if your not prepared to do the time' is a very good example here.
Like Diane said she has made a mockery of those who are honest in the sports because this tends to be remembered more nowadays that the incredible feats drug free athletes achieve.

With all the steroids she's been taking did the authorities still send her to a womens prison?

^LMAO at Lou
She gets what she deserves. First she lied for years about taking the drugs and then she lied to federal investigators. That is what ultimately put her in the pen and I hope all of the baseball players pay attention to this or they may wind up in the clink as well!

Exactly my thoughts. You just have to look at young American athletes compared to ones across the world, and you can't disguise the fact something must be going on in terms of steroids.
Most of the world have been cracking down on it, America seemed to take an easier line when it came to punishing those, but recently with Marion Jones and particularly Gatlin they're taking the hard line approach to try and stamp it out. She was definitely made an example of. Personally I think jail is harsh, a long ban would be sufficient in my view. She could do go by training others then, and give out a positive message about drugs, having her in jail does nothing for the sport imo.

^ You only have to look at athletes from 3rd world countires who train in the very basic way, no big money sponsors or lucrative meetings. Just hard slog and talent without illegal enhancements!
