Motherwell captain O'Donnell diesSuch a tragedy, I wonder what caused the seizure? He leaves a wife and four children RIP
| Quote: | Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell has died after collapsing towards the end of his side's Scottish Premier League game against Dundee United.
The 35-year-old midfielder fell to the ground just as he was about to be replaced with Marc Fitzpatrick near the end of Motherwell's 5-3 victory.
O'Donnell was treated for around five minutes on the field before being taken to a waiting ambulance.
Staff from both clubs, who believe that O'Donnell suffered a seizure, had made efforts to revive him en route to hospital.
But he did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at 1718 GMT. |

Happening quite often now...older players need to be kept in check.

It's not always been older players, players of different ages have collapsed.
Truly sad and shocking... wasn't too long ago that we were slaughtering him from Ibrox. He was a good player, had typical true Scottish grit!!
Rest in peace Phil O'Donnell

Very sad news, i beleive he is the 5th player to die whilst/after a match, the rest of them were in their 20s as well so i don't think it's age. One was a goalkeeper age 22! The news is even worse when you hear he has 4 kids all between age 5-13. I beleive a couple of games have been cancelled for Motherwell and rightly so, i didn't know the player but any death is terrible news. It was on SSN most of last night and the more i heard the more sad i felt for his family.
El Presidente that could be an interesting theory, i think players need to be watched their intensisty of training i mean especially when you're injured all you want to do is train.

Its a sad event RIP and four young kids thats harsh.
I think its the intensity of the training and many have undetected heart ailments but as the games physically at its fittest now its taking a huge strain on the heart to maintain a level of fitness and thus this is becoming more common.

Maybe people have heart attacks all the time, especially during periods of high activity. It's only natural that some of them would occur on the field of play, nothing to do with football, the fitness of players or the amount of games played each season. It just happens.
I'll always remember him playing for Celtic throughout the late nineties and then making the move to Sheffield Wednesday with Simon Donnelly if I'm correct. Neither made much of an impact due to injuries but he was certainly a talented footballer at one stage.
