mp3 players.

I've decided (after many years of carting my CD walkman around) that I need one of these.  The final straw was when I had to get a bus to Dublin a few weeks ago (trains were on strike) - I ended up carrying a load of CD's everywhere with me!

So, what are the best mp3 players?

I don't like the original iPod's - so they're out.

My boyfriend has a Creative Zen, and that seems quite good as you can watch movies on it too.

What about the iPod Nano?  Anyone have one of those?  Better than the Zen?
funkymonkey

The newest iPod Nano's are good, have large disk capacities and can also play videos.

If you want value for money then the Zen is a better choice but if you want the best design, looks and interface it has to be an iPod. Ford or BMW basically.
Penny

The pink iPod nano - I want!!!

It looks like the Zen is better value for money, and also, with the iPod, do you have to do everything through iTunes, and is that complicated?  I don't know anything about this stuff.
funkymonkey

Yeah you have to do everything through iTunes but it's very simple to use and you can figure it out as you go without reading a manual.
You can set it up so every time you plug your iPod into your puter iTunes syncs your puters' music library with that on the iPod so you don't actually have to do anything. You can of course choose to do it manually and drag and drop stuff.
THD

Not really. All you have to do is go into iTunes->File->Add To Library and click on the file with all your songs in it. I recommend the iPod Nano. The new ones are quite good. Lots of memory, videos, nice look to it and simple navigation. Plus you can brag to your boyfriend about the superiority of Apple over Creative Zen.

Ok, cool.  Bet I'll mess it up anyway if I do get it. lol!

That iPod touch is so pretty....
clevelandspur

^ That touch looks awesome! I would recommend the nano as well. Most people I know who don't have the iPod aren't too happy and have already or do plan on getting an iPod of some sort. The only thing which sucks is it is a pain in the ass to transfer songs if you get a new computer, I found this out a few months ago.

^ Yes, good idea!

He had an iPod before thuough, and he says the battery on the Zen is much better.
crazychick

^ Thats true as I have an iPod and the battery is rubbish.....sometimes I listen to it for like an hour and it runs out!
But then sometimes it lastsssss days....pretty weird.
clevelandspur

^ hmm. I have never had any problems with iPod batteries (nano) they are much improved from the originals
Penny

^ Oh, thats good to know!
AlexH

I have an awful Packard Bell mp3 player-would not recommend that!

From what I have heard, the Creative Zen is far better than the iPod Nano as a lot of people rave on about how great the Zen is and I think its slightly cheaper aswell.
Penny

Hmmmmm.....I'm all confused now!!!

I don't know which one to get.  I've heard all good things about the Zen, and if its cheaper too, then maybe that's the one to go for.  Then again, that pink iPod is so pretty!!!  I'll check prices when I'm in town and see...

Yeah those battery problems were associated with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation iPods. 4th and 5th generation iPods have much better, more reliable batteries.
Lou Cipher

Got an 80gb iPod classic. 5631 tracks on it so far and I've still got a stack of cd's to transfer across.

Got a good speaker system for it too so my hi-fi is totally redundant now.

Yeh I have the original iPod which explains the battery not being a good soemtimes - I think I have the same one as Lou.  But it holds 7,500 songs which is reallyyyy good and I download movies and stuff on it too.

Penny I think you should go for the iPod Nano....my friend has the pink one and its sooo cute!
Serbitar

If the thought of iTunes annoys you (I know it annoys me) you can always get a plug-in for the Media player, Winamp. It works the same way as iTunes (drag across) but what makes it better for me, is it doesn't automatically synchronise my iPod with my Music Collection, which would be annoying, because I have 6 times as much music on my PC than I do on my iPod.

^ Yeah, I know! Its lush.

Thanks for the Winamp heads up, Serb.  A lot of the music on this computer is my boyfs and I wouldn't want it ending up on my iPod.  lol!  WE have very different tastes in music for the most part.
clevelandspur

^ What does he listen to? I know you are very particular with music does it cause fights? lol (i am nosey today)
Penny

Haha! No, its never actually caused any fights.  Lets see - two of his favourite bands are Joy Division and British Sea Power - two bands which I hate.  Then, I love Pearl Jam, who he can't stand.  I think the only bands we agree on are The Manics, New Order, White Rose Movement and Sonic Youth.

He's into a lot of British bands, whereas all my favourites are American.  I'm a girl of Grunge.  Kurt Cobain passed him right by...
clevelandspur

^ It is nice WRM can pull you two together! lol I have never heard of anybody not liking Pearl Jam though?
Penny

^ I know!

Actually, I think that has caused one or two heated arguments. lol!  He doesn't like Eddie's voice. WTF?!
