US Presidential candidates.

I don't know about the UK, but the US Presidential elections are always covered on TV here.  I'm just wondering if anyone has any interest in this, and who your favourite candidates are?

I never knew that each candidate had their own celebrity backers - they appear with them at the caucuses etc - It would  never happen here, but hey, only in America, I guess!  I wonder how much having this celebrity support influcences votes?

So, who are you rooting for?

I've been watching the debates and the caucuses, and Obama is definitely my favourite candidate - I've liked him from the word go (and he has Oprah on his side - lol!) . Most people here are saying that Clinton is a shoe-in for the presidency, but I can see him giving her a run for her money. He's doing well so far. Personally I just don't like Hilary Clinton, so I'm rooting for Obama. John Edwards creeps me out.

I haven't seen much of the Republican candidates apart from Giuliani and Huckabee.

I've watched it a bit and Obama does seem very appealing although he has been accused of being a dreamer and a bit fuzzy on the details when pushed. I think he has the beating of Clinton, I hope he does!

As for the Republicans they both seem a little dull and sober in comparison. But! That might actually be very appealing to the US public after having a cartoon character run the country for 8 years.

Definitely backing Obama at this point. Hillary is too wishy washy for me and frankly I don't think she is President material which I guess is a bit daft to say considering who was running our country the past 8 years! Obama looks to be in the lead currently and I think it is a two horse race for the office between them. It will be a groundbreaking election if one of the two get in. Obama being a minority I think will hurt him. As sad as it is there is a still a racist contigent (Deep south)here that will turn up and vote against him just because he is black. I also have gotten countless spam e-mails stating Obama is a terrorist because he has Muslim roots and I even believed he was muslim (not that I cared) but that is false. So it is sad that this type of stuff still goes on in the current society we live.

W's actions have pretty much made it a foregone conclusion that it will be a Democrat in office and add to that the Republican candidates are zeros.

The celebrity backling gets on my nerves a little. i think it is sad they they have pull in these matters but it is what it is as they say.

Its been quite interesting-far more interesting than UK politics.

Im supporting Obama aswell. His message of change seems appealing and his plans to pull out of Iraq will win him votes. He just seems honest and is a fresh spin on politics. Really do hope he can pull it off and win.
I dont like Clinton. She just has that look in her eyes of evilness. She seems quite sly and she just comes across as a bi*ch. She had a go at Obama the other day, yet he congratulated her on the win in New Hampshire. How rude of her!

The Rebublicans seem a bit meh. Huckabee is quite interesting though as I read an article on him in the paper so I hope he does well. The fact Romney hasent won yet despite his cash says a lot, McCain seems too old aswell.

Hmm I guess I'm a bit different to everyone else - I quite like Clinton and think she'll be a better president than her husband was. Obama is a good candidate, and I think he'll beat Hillary.

I don't like Republicans in general so I don't care about them.

I'm firmly in Obama's camp and feel as though his message of a change in the political scene, in which parties stop with bitter partizanship and begin a coalition to improve the lives of those in the nation. I've read his book the Audacity of Hope and he is definately the best to lead the nation.

Also.... Obama girl is.. well, perfect!

^ Agreed Norman  laugh

As for the Republicans I am just glad it looks Giuliani is not going to get nominated. I never liked him. He had New York in a shambles and his franchising drove away many family businesses. Alot of his decisions were just awful and pre 9/11 his approval ratings in NYC were the lowest in years, racial tensions were higher than ever before. So he handled the 9/11 situation with calm and class and he was revered by many nationally and worldwide but it should not coat over the fact most of his actaul decisions in office were awful!

When I think about Obama all I can see is Bin Laden for some reason. Could be worse I suppose, it could be Obomba.

I think he would do a better job of promoting the states worldwide and getting the US of A into line with Global Environmental issues. The current administration is a joke when it comes to ratifying deals on the Green issues.

^ I will be honest, apart form the tosser who is currently president of the United States, I know very little about US politics.
cosmicrichie

There's not much to know really, and no real point to knowing. They make all the decisions and the rest of the world follows...unfortunately!

don't be a gay.... vote Obama!

Personally

I am tired of politics and am planning on voting for McCain. We need a war veteran during war time. McCain spent the better part of his tour in a Vietcong prison camp going through countless hours of torture and seing his friends murdered. Which is why I will vote for him if he gets nominated.

Oh and Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents the United States has seen in the last 30 years despite his personal adventures. I will absolutely NEVER vote for his wife. She is a real b!tch and is trying her best to get rid of guns, which I am totally against. But I won't get into the negatives.

If McCain does not get the republican nomination, I will definately vote for Obama, who I think will make friends with middle eastern countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia instead of pissing them off every chance he gets like our current president does. Also, he has REALLY bettered the city of Chicago, which had the highest crime rate in the United States' fifteen years ago and is now ranked 26th in crime. If a man can turn around a place like Chicago, I would definately like to see what he can do with the whole country.

Hmm I'm definitely against guns, and when your main rivals for best president in the last 30 years are the two Bushs it's not much contest  tongue But anyway, that's just my opinion, I've had enough arguments with LadyC about America to last a lifetime. Welcome to the DL forum!!!  wink
Diane

^ I agree about the guns, aren't there enough gun related crimes in America? Something needs to be done about laws with guns for definite.
cosmicrichie

^^I read somewhere that in countries that have the death penalty, crime rates are actually higher, especially more dangerous crimes like rape, murder, gun crime etc. Kind of goes against the argument for the death penalty

John Kerry has endorsed Obama, which will surely boost his bid....

Hopefully we'll have a black President yet!

^ This just in the states of Alabama and Mississippi are crying tongue
Haywood

I definately for Borrack (sp) Obama I agree with what he says he may be a dreamer but has better goals for america and is the future. hillairy only won the recent one for her tears. either way one will win i think and it will be something new
AlexH

Just read all the candidates plans on the BBC website and the Republican candidates apart from McCain just dont sound up to the job with policies that are quite risque.
The one thing worrying me is that most journalists are tipping Clinton to win the Democrat vote.
