US schoolgirls make 'pregnancy pact'.How messed up is this?!
I wonder what exactly the reasoning behind this is. Surely, the majority of girls feel that having a baby while still in school is not the way to go. My school had a pretty high teenage pregnancy rate (for a pretty medium sized school) - or so I thought. We had at least three or four a year. Never 17 all at once though!!
Do you think that films such as Juno, and celebrities such as Jamie Lynn Spears have played a part in teenage pregnancy figures in the US rising for the first time in 14 years?
| Quote: | A school in Massachusetts, America, is investigating reports of a 'pregnancy pact' among its schoolgirls, after a surge in the number of teenage girls expecting babies.
A report from Time magazine has revealed that 17 girls at a school in the predominantly Catholic fishing town, Gloucester, with a population of just 30,000, are pregnant – four times as many as last year. All 17 of the girls at Gloucester High School are 16 or younger.
The headmaster of the school, Joseph Sullivan, spoke to the magazine saying last autumn officials spotted a number of girls at the school had been requesting pregnancy tests from the clinic. By May this year, the clinic's nurse had distributed 150 tests and some students were returning for more.
Mr Sullivan explained: 'Some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were.'
After questioning the schoolgirls, almost half confessed to making a pact with their friends to get pregnant and raise their children together.
Some of the fathers were men in their twenties and Mr Sullivan explained: 'We found out one of the father is a 24-year-old homeless guy.'
Teenage pregnancy in the US has increased for the first time in 14 years. Some blame films like Juno and Knocked Up, claiming they are pro-pregnancy. Whilst celebrities like Jamie Lynn Spears are also being blamed, after the 17-year-old sister of Britney gave birth to a baby girl yesterday. |

^ I think that gradually society has slipped down a slope. The way girls dress as young teens now is shocking and sex is more accepted at a younger age. Maybe the young celebrites have contributed I don't know. I was 15 when I cashed in the v card so to speak but now adays that would be very late. 12 and 13 year olds are having sex all the time, which is disturbing.

Ha! I don't know about the 12/13 year old thing. At least not where I live but then again, there's no one in my school that's pregnant. In fact doubt many of them have had sex, only the rough ones with the thick Limerick accents and the big rat heads on them.
That is pretty weird though, why would the girls want to through away their life like that? They're far too young to have a child, what about any career prospects, any chance at a normal life? Nuts..

There are a lot of sexually active young girls where I live. As young as 14. It worries me, particularly because they're not exactly very 'careful'. My daughter is 12 1/2 and I cannot bear the thought that in as little as 2 years she could be considering sex. To give her some credit, I honestly think she has more sense than that. But then I guess the parents of those girls thought the same.
I was 17 before I lost my virginity, and my daughter knows this. At moment she thinks sex is gross and I tell her regularly to hang onto that thought. I've also told her that the younger you are when you start shagging (not those words mind) the higher risk you have of developing cancer of the cervix. I encourage her as much as I can not to rush into something like that and not to feel she should do anything like that just because her mates might be.

^ That is what it was like in my day too. Usually the rough looking girls were the ones who would have sex young, maybe for attention or to get guys they normally wouldn't lol Now it is common around here I talk to younger kids and my cousins about it, and I know it is far worse in the inner city areas.

i think where i grew up that the teenage pregnancy rate is going up radically my sister got pregnant at 17 and resents me because im 21 and still haven't i dont want to get pregnant either. its worse that my friend is only 20 and has just had her third child. what a waste of her life but she says "yea but wen they are older iwill still be young enough to go out and live life" thing is wen she does finally get to go out and live life she will be going out to find people half her age drinking in the same places i wouldn't want that myself
people should take more precautions or at least make them available to younger people

Its shocking to me that girls of 12,13 and 14 are going out and having sex now. I wasn't even thinking about sex at that age.
A lot of commentators are saying that schools are making the mistake of teaching 'abstinence' instead of safe sex in the States, so these girls have no real sex education, which is why the figures are going up and up over there.
Sleeping with a random homeless dude is pretty sick!

I've never known anyone in my school thats had a baby for the 6 years I've been there.....I'm sure theres a few that have been pregnant but either left before it showed or got rid of it.
And why the hell would an under 16 year old want to have sex with a 24 year old homeless guy?!! Its crazy!

I had my first child at 19, and I don't think I've wasted my life. Granted I wouldn't want my daughter to have a baby as young as I had her because you do miss out on a lot, but I certainly wouldn't change it.
I do agree however that to have had a 3rd child by 20 is rather extreme and a little careless given the contraception that's available these days.

yea it is although if you are of age and have a child i dont see anything wrong with that but its wen you go a little lot younger and start to think about having children when it begins to go a bit silly i mean for example when a 16 year old gets pregnant just so that she can move out of her parents home and not have to work that is just rediculas

Absolutely. That's naivety at it's best. They end up spending their whole life on benefit and it's not exactly a great life goal in that situation.
I watched a tv documentary not long ago that was about a 14 year old girl who had a baby. It's insane. If - God forbid - either of my daughters got pregnant at that age I would a) have to fight very hard to not to kill them, and b) encourage them to have a termination. I'm sure that sounds awful to some but how can you go along with a child having a child? Obviously if it came down to it I would support them, but I'd rather not have to face that quite frankly!

You want to walk around Sunderland town centre!
Sheesh! It looks like the whole of the city's under 20's have had a frikin pact!!!
I only ever pop up on my lunch break to get a sarnie and if it's not Polish people it's 16 year old 'bastard collectors' with their selection of various children from various fathers all sucking on Gregg's cheese pasties, while they smoke fags in pink shell suits. Mingin!!!! They clearly only have the children as a form of income so to get a wage rise they pop out another bastard!*
Don't get me started!
*No offence to normal single parents who have actually had a child because they wanted one and not because they needed a 'wage' rise.
